What is the Humanitarian Exchange Language?

The Humanitarian Exchange Language (HXL) is a simple standard for messy data. It is based on spreadsheet formats such as CSV or Excel. The standard works by adding hashtags with semantic information in the row between the column header and data allow software to validate, clean, merge and analyse data more easily.
